Joan of Arc features an array of collaborators who were asked to perform “what insanity looks like to them” while clad in the same costume. The work pulls from the historical tale of Joan of Arc, the French patron saint who was condemned to be burned at the stake for her transgressive valor. Building upon the myth of her madness—her hearing of voices and seeing of visions—Joan of Arc collapses temporalities and states of being. We are provoked to ask, who exactly is “crazy,” and are they even so? The continuity created by the universal outfit extends the Joan of Arc character across several bodies and their individual embodiments of a singular entity. Joan of Arc enunciates the multiplicities of mania, while simultaneously reaping the familiarity it bears to us all. - Emma Huerta
